Schools Encouraged to Note Character Week
Ventura County schools are being encouraged to recognize Oct. 12-18 as “Character Counts!” week to draw attention to the importance of character building and the development of moral values.
“Along with parents and families, educators are obliged to awaken youth to the moral and ethical values that build a fundamental strength of character,” said Charles Weis, Ventura County’s superintendent of schools.
“Most if not all, Ventura County school districts have worked to create character education lessons for students of every age,” Weis said in a prepared statement.
The week has been designated by the state Board of Education as the time in which parents and communities are informed about lessons in character that are embedded in the curriculum, Weis said.
“Elements of good character and personal and social morality are being discussed and analyzed throughout the year by students and teachers, particularly in the history and social science frameworks,” he said.
October is being recognized nationwide as Character Education Month.
