Renewed Hope for Plaza Redevelopment

Share

There is new hope among city leaders that stalled redevelopment efforts in Stanton Plaza soon may be renewed.

The 11-acre complex, at Beach Boulevard and Orangewood Avenue, is considered a promising commercial area. But the plaza has needed rehabilitation for nearly a decade, city planners said.

The eight land parcels are owned by separate individuals, who have recently shown a new willingness to cooperate with rehabilitation efforts, City Manager Terry Matz said.

The plaza’s largest business, the 99 Cent Only Store, was destroyed by fire in September 1994 and was not rebuilt because of ongoing legal disputes.

If Stanton Plaza property owners do not cooperate with rehabilitation efforts, Matz said the city could be forced to consider condemnation.
