Share

After a sloppy first half that included a combined five fumbles, Edison finally pulled away for a 31-0 victory over Sonora in a nonleague football game Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Edison received a boost from running back Darin Pope, who rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yarder, in 19 carries.

Four Charger starting defenders--linebackers Ryan Tritz and Brandon Jordan and defensive backs John Moos and Ryan Walters--were sidelined because of injuries. Coach Dave White praised their backups for their part in the shutout.

“There are different guys that come through for us every week,” White said. “That’s why we’re undefeated.”

The Chargers (4-0-1) started strong, taking the opening kickoff and going 67 yards in 11 plays. Josh Kogler’s three-yard touchdown run capped the drive. Edison scored 14 more points in the second quarter on Pope’s five-yard run and a one-yard pass from Jeff Grady to Kogler.

Sonora could not capitalize on its opportunities. After recovering a fumble, the Raiders (2-3) had a field-goal attempt blocked. After recovering another fumble, the Raiders fumbled the ball back at the Edison 15-yard line.

Edison defensive lineman Shane DiGiorgio recovered two fumbles.
