Agoura Wins, Hopes It Doesn’t Turn Into Loss

Agoura High won a football game, but may have lost something more important.

Quarterback Ryan McCann left the Chargers’ game against Royal with a injury to his left shoulder area in the third quarter of a 20-7 Marmonte League victory Thursday night.

McCann, a left-hander, was taken to Los Robles Columbia Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for X-rays after the game.

McCann was injured on a keeper with 5:05 left in the third quarter. He was tackled after gaining three yards and remained down for nearly two minutes.

“I heard it pop,” said McCann, who watched the rest of the game with his left arm in a sling. “I heard something separate. Hopefully, I’ll be able to come back next week.”

McCann, scheduled to make an official visit to California today with teammate Marcus Helfman, completed 12 of 20 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.

Postgame prognoses ranged from a bruise to a separated shoulder to a broken collarbone.

“I think a week is optimistic,” Agoura Coach Charlie Wegher said. “It’s hard to tell.”

Backup quarterback Alex LaFazia completed one of three passes for three yards, but the Chargers (4-1, 2-0 in Marmonte League play) didn’t need to throw because they had running back Chris Poling.

Poling rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns in 27 carries and helped the Chargers overcome a 7-0 halftime deficit with two touchdowns in the first 3:34 of the third quarter.

The Chargers went 65 yards on the first three plays of the second half, Poling capping the minute-long drive with a 15-yard run.

Five plays after Steve Sheehan fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the Royal 17, McCann found Aaron Pruter for a four-yard touchdown. Poling bowled in for a two-point conversion to give Agoura a 14-7 lead.

Royal (3-2, 0-2), which won its first three games with a strong ground game, got only 63 yards in 19 carries from Sheehan and Bryant Phipps.

Sheehan scored for the Highlanders on a three-yard run.
