Fire officials are investigating a blaze that gutted a flower shop Saturday near the Center Point Mall in Oxnard.

The 4:30 p.m. blaze at Skyline Flower Gardens, 2931 Saviers Road, sent up a head of smoke visible in Ojai, said Battalion Chief Terry McAnally, with the Oxnard Fire Department.

“It was billowing black smoke 100 feet in the air,” he said.

When firefighters arrived, the 5,625-square-foot flower shop, situated a block south of the mall, was fully involved in flames, McAnally said.

In addition to flowers, plants and trees, the cinder-block building housed patio furniture.

Six engine crews had the blaze knocked down in less than 20 minutes, and firefighters remained on the scene until after 6 p.m. ensuring that all the hot spots were out.

Saviers Road was closed in both directions while firefighters battled the blaze. The northbound lanes were reopened at 5:30 p.m., and the southbound lanes were open to traffic about 7 p.m.

The cause is not known, and officials were trying to determine the dollar amount of the damage.
