Promise Keepers Aren’t About Politics

Share

God says in the Bible that he would confound the wisdom of the world. This is evident in many of the clueless editorials and public commentary regarding the Promise Keepers event in Washington, D.C.

My husband is a Promise Keeper and we have been looking forward to this event for a very long time. We have been eagerly listening to and reading any news concerning this event.

However, much of the news has been cynical, critical and filled with accusations. The accusations are that Promise Keepers is about right-wing conservative Christian white male political power. That these men are not sincere in their desire to become reconciled to God, their families and others. And that the mates of these men, whether through force or blind ignorance, must bow our backs in submission to an oppressive patriarchal rule. This is not true.

The truth, purely and simply: This is about God. It is about the creation worshiping the creator. It is about faith in a loving, personal God. A resolute belief that the Bible is the unerring word of God. God’s word is our standard, our identity, and the foundation for how we live our lives. It is the essence of how we discern issues such as abortion and morality and character.

If we are pressured to compromise any part of God’s tenets in order to fit more comfortably into society, we will be turning our backs on our basic identity.

For many of those who deny God, it is hard to understand Christians. Collectively and individually, we are watched with a suspicious eye, our intentions are perceived as being evil and subversive at worst; ignorant, foolish and unrealistic at best.

Is not this the basis for bigotry of any kind?
