Coastal Commission Rejects One-Hour Parking Limit

The California Coastal Commission has turned down a request by Long Beach to limit parking in the Marina Park area, commonly called Mothers Beach, saying it would reduce public access to the beach.

Residents of the Mothers Beach area in Naples have long complained about people who avoid paying to park in the 162-space lot by parking for free on residential streets.

In response, the Long Beach City Council recently voted to establish one-hour parking, with permits exempting residents. But the Coastal Commission said time limit too restrictive.

“One hour is awfully short,” said Coastal Commission planner Pam Emerson. “If you bring two small children and equipment, it might take you 20 minutes to get down to the beach.”

Emerson said the city could make another attempt but must recognize the Coastal Commission’s concern with beach access, which she said means beach parking.
