Planning Commission OKs Market’s Design
The city Planning Commission has unanimously approved a new design for a controversial discount supermarket center, months after an earlier design was rejected by the City Council.
Planning commissioners late Tuesday approved the design for the San Gabriel Discount Superstore at the site of a former Target store on Valley Boulevard over the objections of local merchants and a political action committee, who maintain the development will hurt local business.
The opponents had appealed the Design Review Commission’s approval of the project. Deputy City Manager John A. Ornelas said opponents are expected to appeal the Planning Commission’s decision to the City Council.
Developer Hieu Tran wants to build an 108,000-square-foot building and a smaller 38,000-square-foot structure, which together would house four merchants, city officials said.
Earlier this year, the council rejected his plan to build the Shun Fat Plaza with one grocery superstore.
