Cyber Jazz: Manhattan’s downtown jazz club, the Knitting Factory, has turned up in an unusual location, a software program. Filemaker Pro 4.0 from the Claris Corp. is a sophisticated database program that allows users to publish their data in such forms as World Wide Web product catalogs. The program’s built-in example is called Shopping Cart; it is based on the Knitting Factory’s catalog of CDs and album cover graphics and comes with sound samples.
It’s not a bad example of creative synergy, and it’s the kind of imaginative marketing that is needed for jazz.
