Police Show a Profit on Abandoned Car Removal

Share

Removing abandoned vehicles from city roadways could earn the Police Department as much as $200,000 annually under the state’s Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program.

The department received more than $48,000 from the state this week for its removal efforts during the final quarter of 1996-97.

The check is the first for the city, which joined the program last year.

Enacted in 1990, the state program encourages law enforcement agencies to remove abandoned vehicles from roads, for safety and aesthetic reasons.

In turn, the state distributes money from vehicle registration fees to law enforcement agencies based on the number of abandoned vehicles impounded and the city’s population.

The departments can use the money to cover removal costs and other services.

Orange County police agencies received about $2 million under the state program.
