A hit-and-run driver struck a woman and her 9-month-old daughter Thursday night, then dragged the baby underneath the car for a short distance before speeding off, authorities said.

The baby, who suffered road rash and cuts, was airlifted to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, where she was listed in serious but stable condition, police said. They added that the girl’s injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.

The 30-year-old mother was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. Her condition was not available.

The crash occurred about 8:15 p.m. in the 7900 block of Lankershim Boulevard near Saticoy Street. It was not clear whether the mother and child were in a crosswalk, said Los Angeles Police Officer George Maycott. A description of the car and other details were unavailable.

The car was last seen heading east toward San Fernando Road, Maycott said.
