Pepperdine Lands Lewis, 6-3 Guard From Portland

Pepperdine’s basketball team has received a commitment from Craig Lewis, a 6-foot-3 guard from Benson High in Portland, Ore.

Lewis, who visited Pepperdine last weekend, chose the Waves over Santa Clara and canceled recruiting trips to Minnesota, Washington State and Pacific.

Lewis averaged 17 points and seven assists last season.

BOXING

Valley card: Mark Carrier of Bristol, Tenn., will face Arthur Weathers of Louisville, Ky., in a 10-round heavyweight bout that will headline the return of monthly boxing Nov. 9 at Reseda Country Club.

The undercard will include Chuck Goossen of North Hollywood against Fausto Carrera of Los Angeles in a six-round middleweight bout. Also scheduled are junior-middleweight Carlos Martinez of Oxnard and super-middleweight Chris Bertran.

VOLLEYBALL

‘Dawg collared: Volleyball player Melissa Kuhn of Kennedy High has committed to Fresno State. Kuhn, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, was an All-City Section 4-A selection last season. She selected the Bulldogs over West Virginia, Wichita State and Alabama-Birmingham.

MOTOR SPORTS

New ride: Jason Pridmore of Ventura will have a factory-built Suzuki on which to compete for the 1998 American Motorcycle Assn. Superbike championship.

Pridmore earned $10,000 by winning the 600 and 750 SuperSport races in the Suzuki Cup Challenge at Road Atlanta last weekend. Pridmore will continue his association with Van Nuys-based Team HyperCycle Suzuki for the 600 and 750 SuperSport series.
