Michael Nylander’s goal with 19 seconds left in overtime helped the Flames rally from a four-goal deficit to record their first win of the season, beating Colorado, 6-5, at Calgary, Canada.

It was the Avalanche’s first loss in eight games.

On the game-winner, Theoren Fleury fired a shot at Craig Billington and the rebound kicked out to Nylander, who scored his first goal in nearly two years.

Colorado took a 4-0 lead in the first period, and Joe Sakic’s power-play goal early in the third gave the Avalanche a 5-3 cushion.

St. Louis 2, Chicago 0--Grant Fuhr made 28 saves for the fast-starting Blues at Chicago.

Geoff Courtnall and Harry York scored for the Blues (6-1), who are off to their best start since joining the NHL in 1967-68.

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks are 0-7-0, equaling their worst record at the start of a season, previously set in 1947-48. Chicago remains the only NHL team without a point.

The Blackhawks, shut out for the second consecutive game at home, have not scored in 179 minutes 32 seconds.

“Sure, it’s embarrassing, you’re damn right it’s embarrassing,” Chicago’s Brent Sutter said.

Ottawa 4, New Jersey 2--Daniel Alfredsson scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the Senators defeated the Devils before 13,681, the smallest crowd of the season at the Corel Centre at Kanata, Canada.

It was only the second game of the season for Alfredsson, the 24-year-old forward who signed a $14.1-million contract Sunday.

His first two goals of the season kept the Senators atop the Northeast Division at 4-2-2.

Alfredsson’s decisive score came on a power play with 86 seconds left in the second period.

Montreal 5, Buffalo 1--Vincent Damphousse scored his first two goals of the season and added one assist to lead the Canadiens past the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y.

Damphousse opened the scoring 59 seconds into the game, and he gave the Canadiens a 4-0 lead early in the second period as Montreal won its first game in Buffalo since March 22, 1996.

Vladimir Malakhov and Benoit Brunet added goals 59 seconds apart in the first period, giving goaltender Jocelyn Thibault a comfortable lead en route to his first win in three starts.

Shayne Corson had a power-play goal for the Canadiens, who had beaten the Sabres once in 10 previous games in Buffalo.

Pittsburgh 4, Tampa Bay 1--Martin Straka, Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr scored second-period goals as the Penguins beat the Lightning at Tampa, Fla.

The scoring outburst surpassed the Penguins’ two-goal total during their last two games. Despite the limited offensive production, Pittsburgh improved its record on a franchise-high, eight-game trip to 2-0-1.

Boston 2, Vancouver 0--Jim Carey, coming off a 3-0 win over Anaheim, stopped 32 shots to extend his shutout streak to 128 minutes 31 seconds.

Ray Bourque and Ted Donato scored power-play goals as the visiting Bruins won their third straight this season and fourth consecutive against the Canucks. Boston’s last loss in Vancouver was Oct. 19, 1993.

Carey’s biggest stop in recording the 16th shutout of his career came during a Canuck power play a minute into the third period. After getting a piece of Mattias Ohlund’s point shot, Carey reached behind him and swept a loose puck out of the crease.
