What a joyous surprise to see a positive article on the music and accomplishments of Barry Manilow (“Give His Regards to Broadway,” by Jan Breslauer, Oct. 12). Mass-appeal artists such as Manilow are seldom given the proper respect. Reviewers tend to praise underground bands and ignore popular vocalists.

I remember, in 1978, Manilow sold out two weeks at the Greek Theatre and The Times’ Robert Hilburn trashed the music, the audience and Manilow’s pop blandness. How refreshing to see that Manilow continues to sell out concerts and create Broadway musicals while many of the acts Hilburn lauded as being cutting-edge and revolutionary have long since disbanded.

OK, sue me, but I like Barry Manilow.

What? I can’t hear you. Let me turn down my John Tesh tape. Has anybody seen my Yanni? I just had it.
