More Vietnam-Era Bombs Dug Up in Railroad Yard
Sheriff’s deputies planned to evacuate residents in this Sacramento suburb late Saturday after eight more unexploded Vietnam War-era bombs were found in a railroad yard.
Railroad workers discovered the bombs nearly two weeks after finding a similar bomb in the same yard. The site was near an area where a trainload of bombs exploded 24 years ago.
“We are not evacuating now but at some point we are more than likely going to have to have evacuations,” Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Cooper said.
Sheriff’s officials said a military bomb squad from Moffett Field in Mountain View was called to the site at the Union Pacific rail yards.
The bombs were discovered Saturday afternoon by railroad workers replacing tracks at the rail yard, which is being renovated. The previous bomb also was found by Union Pacific workers tearing up tracks.
Six bombs were described as being in good condition.
The other two were badly damaged by workers in their earth-moving equipment. All the bombs were described as dangerous.
