Get Going Without Cash in Hong Kong
Hong Kong now offers an electronic card that lets travelers use the subway, train, bus and some ferry systems without fumbling for cash or separate tickets. The so-called Octopus Card works much like some prepaid telephone cards. Purchasers pay a fixed amount for the card, swipe it along processors at passenger gates, and the card’s built-in microchip automatically deducts the fare. When the fares are used up, the card can be “reloaded” at transit ticket offices. The card costs about $14 for adults, $7 for students and $2.75 for children and seniors--plus a $7 deposit that is refunded when the card is returned. Cards can be bought at Hong Kong Tourist Assn. Information counters and transit ticket offices and service centers.
