Oldest U.S. Subway to Mark Centennial
From Times Wire Reports
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which operates the oldest subway in the U.S., formally celebrates its 100th anniversary Tuesday. The Boston subway opened Sept. 1, 1897, though officials are commemorating the centennial seven weeks late to coincide with the bicentennial of another Boston institution, the ship Constitution. On the first day of service, 100,000 people tried the subway. Today, 700,000 people use the system every week day.
