The boos began as soon as Notre Dame fans saw Ron Powlus trotting onto the field in the fourth quarter against USC. The fans didn’t want him. They wanted his backup, Jarious Jackson.

Now it looks as if they might get their wish. With the Irish 2-5, Coach Bob Davie said Sunday it might be time for a change.

“He’s not playing like a quarterback on a 2-5 team,” Davie said. “But the reality is we are 2-5, and there is a point where Ron Powlus is a senior and Jarious Jackson [a junior] probably needs to get snaps. So it’s an unfortunate situation.”

Davie said he and his staff will decide what--if any--changes to make in the next day or two. But unlike every other time he has been asked about switching quarterbacks, Davie didn’t say anything about Powlus giving the Irish the best chance to win.

“We’re going to do what we can do to No. 1, win games, and No. 2, do what’s best for Notre Dame and our future,” he said.
