Cal Lutheran to Host Day of the Dead Fete

Share

A Latin American celebration in honor of the dead will be observed at Cal Lutheran University’s Ahmanson Science Center on Oct. 30.

El Dia de los Muertos--or Day of the Dead--combines religion and myth to honor and remember loved ones who have died. According to tradition, the gates between the worlds of the living and the dead open on All Saints Day--Nov. 1--and the dead return to be with their loved ones in the living world.

The celebration begins at 11 a.m., when students will build an altar for the event. Organizers ask community members to join students in placing items on the altar in honor of their loved ones. Participants are asked to obey tradition by wearing costumes that portray the symbol of death. A cash prize will be awarded for the best costume.
