College to Help Train Welfare Recipients

Share

Irvine Valley College is preparing for welfare reform through the AmeriCorps Literacy Program, which will give 48 welfare recipients career training and work experience in literacy efforts at local elementary and preschools.

In July, the California Community College state chancellor’s office received a $1.8-million AmeriCorps grant, one of the largest in the United States. Irvine Valley was one of 15 community colleges in California selected to serve as a pilot site for the program.

The college will receive $100,000 each year for the next three years to provide early childhood educational training, coupled with work experience and educational stipends for welfare recipients completing the program.
