Man Gets Life Sentence in Deadly Holdup at ATM

A man convicted of shooting a construction worker to death at a Covina automated teller machine was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Charles Lee Simpson, 19, of Covina, was sentenced by Pomona Superior Court Judge William McVittie two months after a jury convicted him of murdering Corey Stansfield, authorities said.

A security camera at the Wells Fargo Bank in Covina captured the July 1996 murder of Stansfield as he withdrew money from a drive-up ATM.

Simpson surrendered to West Covina police last August after officials released the videotape that shows the murder.

Stansfield, 23, who had just left a church meeting, stopped at the ATM in an open-top sports utility vehicle.

The videotape showed that as Stansfield withdrew cash from the ATM, a man prosecutors said was Simpson came up from behind, shot him and tried to take his money.
