Christian School Faces Eviction From Public Site

A private Christian school that has leased a building from the Orange Unified School District for 10 years will receive an eviction notice next week.

The action came Thursday, after angry parents from Fletcher Elementary School demanded that trustees evict Southern California Christian Schools, which is $80,000 behind in rent payments at the former Orange-Olive Elementary School.

Fearing their overcrowded school would go on a year-round schedule, the parents insisted the district reopen Orange-Olive, which was closed in 1987.

Some also demanded that Trustee Martin Jacobson, who has a stepson at the private school, abstain from voting, but administrators said that was not necessary.

The trustees voted 5 to 2 to send a default notice on Oct. 30, giving the private school until June 30 to vacate. Trustees Jacobson and Max Reissmueller voted against the move.

“It’s sad, but we’ll rebound and do something even better,” Jim Allen, superintendent of the 140-student Christian school, said Friday.
