Equity Needed in Tollway Fees

Share

Re “No Accounting for Toll Roads,” Letters, Oct. 12:

After years of saving, I am finally able to buy my own home in Aliso Viejo, fully aware there will be a Mello-Roos tax to pay for the new streets, schools, library, etc. I am more than willing to pay this tax, knowing I will have to cut back in other areas.

When I learned that the toll would be $2 each way, I realized the San Joaquin Hills toll road was a luxury I will have to live without.

I can imagine what it will feel like to cross over the toll road on surface streets and sit at red light after red light, just trying to get to the 405 Freeway. This would not be so bad, except that I now know that some of the Mello-Roos tax I will be paying is also going toward the payment of the construction of the toll road--a toll road that I cannot afford to use.

Letter writer Marilyn Green suggested that Aliso Viejo homeowners be given a discount or that entry and exit monitors be set up. Both of her suggestions were excellent in establishing a more equitable means of collecting tolls.
