Authorities are investigating the weekend crash of a small stunt plane near Piru that claimed the lives of two people.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lance Young said someone called 911 about 5:15 p.m. Sunday to report a plane had gone down south of California 126, near the Ventura-Los Angeles county line.

Young said deputies on the scene described seeing an impact crater surrounding the severely damaged aircraft.

“The aircraft is damaged to the point where we cannot tell what type of aircraft it is,” Young said.

The identities of those killed in the crash had not been determined late Sunday evening.

Authorities said the plane may have gone down Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, a friend of two people who left Van Nuys Airport in a private plane notified Los Angeles County authorities that the plane had not returned.

Young said the effort to remove the wreckage will begin this morning.
