Revised Policy Urged After Five Trees Are Removed

Share

Whittier residents rankled over tree removal are pushing the city to clarify its policy.

The dispute over the policy began in July when the public works department failed to give proper notice before removing five trees that buckled the sidewalk on Broadway Avenue and were a safety hazard to elderly residents, said city parks Director Hideo Hamano.

Under the current tree policy, healthy trees are not removed unless there is either property damage or a health and safety hazard, Hamano said. Hazardous or diseased trees may be removed after a 24-hour posting, he said.

The commission is considering whether to extend notification to 14 to 30 days in the neighborhood around the property, Hamano said.
