Workshop Will Offer Tips on Preparing for El Nino

Share

How to use sandbags, what to do with a leaky roof, clearing out gutters and how to obtain flood insurance will be among the topics discussed at an El Nino preparedness workshop tonight. The El Segundo public works and fire departments have teamed up for the presentation in an attempt to educate residents about how to prepare for winter storms. Susan Duenas, the city’s disaster preparedness coordinator, said several neighborhoods in El Segundo are in low-lying areas that are susceptible to flooding.

She said the city has 5,000 sandbags, more than double the amount usually on hand, for the storm. Duenas said the city has also rented two water pumps that have been placed in the areas most susceptible to flooding.

“We’re making a big push for residents to do all they can to be prepared,” Duenas said. “We want to make sure they’re in good shape.”
