Diabetic Children Treated to a Halloween Party

Halloween can be the ultimate sugar high for children, but the holiday can pose a serious health danger for children with diabetes.

In an effort to make the holiday a special one for diabetic children and their families, a “Sugar-Free Halloween” party was hosted by doctors from the Long Beach Memorial and UC Irvine hospitals Tuesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Long Beach.

Diabetic children, their siblings and parents came dressed in costumes and enjoyed an evening of entertainment, prizes and sugar-free treats. Students from Jordan High School assisted the doctors in staffing games and booths.

“The children really enjoyed themselves,” said Dr. Marcela Dominguez. “We did not want them to completely miss out on a significant event in a child’s life.”
