‘Ellen’ Sitcom

In her column objecting to the television show “Ellen,” (Voices, Oct. 25) Sue Perez of the Traditional Values Coalition says that a show which portrays a lesbian woman kissing another woman does not promote “healthy values” and goes against a “higher standard of morality.”

Why? I am a heterosexual and very conservative politically, yet I see no problem with such things being shown on television, or even with homosexuality itself. Homosexuality was common in ancient Greece, the society which brought us mathematics and philosophy. In our society, many homosexuals are intelligent, hard-working and productive--not exactly people to be afraid or ashamed of. Is it really such a disaster if they are depicted in a favorable light on a television program?

Thank goodness for James D. Key’s articulate response to the “Ellen” question. There was a time when shrill, insensitive, bigoted voices like Perez’s could cause mortal damage to gay youth and men and women struggling to come to terms with their God-given sexuality. With a higher suicide rate seen among gay youth, we are sure lucky for Key’s voice to counter that type of hatred.
