Head Start Gets $1.7 Million for Child-Care Program
Long Beach Head Start has received a $1.7-million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to expand affordable child care.
The grant comes on the heels of a White House conference, hosted by President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton, that focused on the importance of high-quality affordable child care.
Using the grant funds, the Long Beach Unified School District’s Head Start program will train current and former Head Start parents to become independent licensed family child-care providers in their homes, district spokesman Richard Van Der Laan said.
Next year, Head Start plans to help at least 60 Long Beach parents create at least 480 child-care spaces. The grant also will allow Long Beach Head Start to serve an additional 264 preschoolers and their families, bringing the total served to 1,732 preschool children.
