Fullerton Soccer Takes Second

Cal State Fullerton beat Santa Clara, 2-1, on goals by Alessio Smith and Sheldon Thomas in the final round of the Reebok Invitational men’s soccer tournament Sunday in front of 1,093 at Titan Field.

Smith scored from 20 yards off an assist from Marco Mesrobian at the 38-minute mark. Then, at 70 minutes, Thomas scored from 20 yards also on an assist from Mesrobian.

Santa Clara scored in the 80th minute on a goal by Adam Eyre.

The Titans (1-1) outshot Santa Clara, 13-7, and took second in the tournament. UCLA (2-0) won the tournament, beating Vanderbilt Sunday, 3-0. The Commodores (1-1) finished third and the Broncos (0-2) fourth.

UC Irvine 4, Portland State 1--UC Irvine scored three first-half goals and beat Portland State, 4-1, in a nonconference women’s soccer game Sunday in front of 145 at Beaverton, Ore.

Irvine’s Kori Zimmerman deflected a corner kick to open the scoring, only 1 minute 5 seconds into the game. Teammate Stephanie Rigamat scored on a breakaway at the 6:51 mark. Simone Ferrara completed the first-half scoring on a two-on-one breakaway.

Portland State’s Leah Martin scored the Vikings’ only goal off an assist from Mari Bartlett 58:21 into the game. Irvine’s Nicole Bucciarelli, who also assisted on two goals in the first 22 minutes of the game, capped the scoring at the 61:46 mark.

Irvine goalkeeper Kirsten Roy, from Aliso Niguel High, had three saves. Portland State’s Kim Street had eight.

The Anteaters, who outshot the Vikings 21-5, are 2-0. Portland, under first-year Coach Neil Turnbull, is 0-1.
