Literacy Program Seeks Volunteers

Tutors are needed to teach English-speaking adults how to read through Ventura County Library’s Adult Literacy Program.

Training for volunteers will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16 at the Simi Valley Library.

“It’s a very personal relationship that forms between the student and the tutor, and it makes such a big difference in the adults’ lives they’re working with,” said Pat Flanigan, manager of the program that serves about 1,000 adults per year throughout the county.

During the six hours of basic tutor training, volunteers will be exposed to various methods of tutoring based on student needs. They will also fill out background information sheets, indicate where and when they would like to tutor and then be matched with a student.

“Not only do [students] improve their reading and writing skills, but it affects all areas of their life,” Flanigan said. “They’re more comfortable reading to their children and helping them with schoolwork. It affects community involvement because they’re more likely to vote and get involved in community activities. It helps them move up in their job or to even get a job.

“And it helps with self-esteem. The impact is tremendous in every area of their lives.”

No teaching experience is necessary. Students are evaluated by program staff members, and the necessary materials are supplied to tutors. Volunteers are needed to tutor adults on waiting lists in Simi Valley, Ventura, Oxnard, Moorpark, Fillmore and Camarillo.

The time commitment is one hour twice a week.

The training will be held in the Community Room at the Simi Valley Library at 2969 Tapo Canyon Road.
