Volunteers Help Struggling School Open on Time

Three weeks of donated labor paid off just in time for Tuesday’s start of classes at a financially struggling private school in Compton.

Martina Ayala, principal of Our Lady of Victory School, said the East Palmer Street Catholic school might not have reopened at all without about 100 parents who have volunteered since last month to scrub, paint and repair the 57-year-old campus.

“We almost did not make it,” Ayala said, adding that the self-supporting, 350-student school has had no money to make badly needed repairs on items such as toilets.

Classes will run on a half-day schedule through Friday, Ayala said, while parents and students continue working on plumbing and roofing problems. Information: (310) 631-1320
