Bids Sought for Dredging of Upper Bay

Share

With $2 million of the $5 million it needs, Orange County officials are soliciting bids to dredge Upper Newport Bay.

The county will cover the $3 million not promised by the state.

Although the state budget included only $2 million to clean the bay, Newport Beach officials said they were pleased.

“We’re moving forward so it’s very exciting,” Assistant City Manager Peggy Ducey said.

The state originally set aside $3.9 million for the project, but that was reduced to $2 million during budget negotiations.

The county expects it will be paid back for the bulk of its contribution. The federal government is expected to pitch in about $1 million and the Regional Water Quality Control Board also might contribute.

Dredging, originally expected to start this month, might begin by October.
