Trojans Own Market at the Corners

The glamour matchup between USC and Florida State at the Coliseum on Saturday will be between the Trojan cornerbacks--Daylon McCutcheon and Brian Kelly--and the Seminole receiver corps, led by E.G. Green and Peter Warrick.

“It’s going to be a great challenge,” said Kelly, who pairs with McCutcheon to give USC perhaps the best cornerback tandem in the nation.

“Green is their go-to guy. He’s got great speed, good height, and he’s a strider. He’s a lot like Keyshawn Johnson with his great speed, size and jumping ability.”

Green has caught passes for 1,861 yards in three seasons and has caught at least one pass in 27 consecutive games. His best season was 1995, when he caught 60 passes for 1,007 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Florida State defensive tackle Julian Pittman--suspended by the university pending the outcome of charges of burglary and credit-card fraud--has lost a bid to be reinstated for Saturday’s game.

A federal judge threw out his request for an injunction against the university Wednesday, Florida newspapers reported.

Pittman has filed a $75,000 suit against the Florida Board of Regents, saying he was denied due process and equal treatment by Florida State. He claims policy about pending felony cases is arbitrarily enforced and that he was not granted a hearing.

USC makes such decisions on a case-by-case basis and will have a player in uniform--fullback Ted Iacenda--who is awaiting trial on a rape charge.

USC quarterback Quincy Woods’ future appears to be at both backup quarterback and fourth receiver, but he probably won’t run any plays at receiver Saturday, Coach John Robinson said. . . . R. Jay Soward and McCutcheon are the kickoff-return men, with Chad Morton designated for punt-return duty. Morton, however, won’t start at free safety in the first game because he has been slowed by nagging injuries. Darnell Lacy will be the starting free safety.
