Immigrants Urged to Seek Citizenship
Residents who are not naturalized citizens of the United States will be encouraged to pursue citizenship at Santa Ana College on Sept. 20.
The campus and a number of community organizations are hosting “Citizenship Day” in response to a proposal by the Immigration and Naturalization Service that would dramatically hike citizenship application fees. College officials are worried the potential fee increase and lengthy 18-month wait may discourage people from seeking citizenship. The fee is $95. The proposed increase would make it $275.
Potential new citizens are asked to bring copies of their green cards and information regarding their jobs and residences in the United States over the last five years. Information: (800) 789-9993.
