Parade Kicks Off Weekend of Mission Events

The San Fernando Mission’s bicentennial has inspired a host of events both religious and secular that begin this weekend.

TODAY

* A multicultural parade celebrating the diverse history of the San Fernando Valley will begin at 9:30 a.m. at San Fernando Middle School, 130 N. Brand Blvd., San Fernando. The 1 1/2-mile route will follow Brand Boulevard to Brand Park. (818) 756-8409

* Daylong festivities at Brand Park will include a Native American village with crafts and historical information, arts and crafts for children focusing on Valley history, entertainment, multicultural food and a display by painters, photographers and sculptors. Admission is free to the event that runs from noon to 7 p.m. Free parking is available at Facey Medical Group, 11211 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, or for a $2 donation at Alemany High School, 15241 Rinaldi St., Mission Hills. A free shuttle will operate between the parking lots and Brand Park. (818) 756-8409

* The San Fernando Mission will host a symposium by several noted scholars, which is expected to attract academics from throughout the country. The roles of the Indians and friars will be explored, as well as the economic life of the mission and its role in the new millennium. All seats are booked for this event.

SUNDAY

* Cardinal Roger Mahony will say Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the Old Mission Church at the San Fernando Mission, 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd., Mission Hills. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking available at and around the mission. (818) 361-0186
