2 Edison Workers Are Badly Burned
SANTA CLARITA — Two Southern California Edison workers were severely burned when an electrical component exploded, cutting power to 3,000 customers for about 20 minutes, utilities officials reported Friday.
Charles B. Good, 48, and Michael A. Hughes, 50, both longtime employees and Santa Clarita residents, were trying to repair equipment, situated in a 20-foot deep vault, near Via Pacifica and Wiley Canyon roads, Edison spokesman Steven Conroy said.
The powerful explosion blew a concrete slab off the vault and scorched both men, who were standing about 15 feet from the vault, Conroy said.
Good received second- and third-degree burns over 12% of his body, and Hughes has second-degree burns over 24% of his body, Conroy said.
Both were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia and then to the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital, where they remain in fair condition, Conroy said.
Power was restored to all Edison customers by Friday afternoon, he said.
