The Truth About Dieting
An estimated 50 million Americans a year start diets designed to take off weight, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Eight million of them participate in specific weight-loss programs, some of which make promises that are too good to be true.
The FTC, which regulates the advertising and marketing of foods, nonprescription drugs, medical devices and health care services, has published a brochure, “The Skinny on Dieting,” that analyzes the weight-loss claims of various programs.
