Bruins Catch a Break, or Do They?

Share

Texas quarterback James Brown suffered an ankle injury in the Longhorns’ 48-14 victory over Rutgers on Saturday night, and his availability for the game against UCLA in Austin is questionable.

Longhorn Coach John Mackovic said Sunday that Brown is on a “day-to-day, week-to-week” status, and that a judgment on his availability Saturday against the Bruins would be made later in the week.

Brown was injured in the second quarter when he tried to elude a Rutgers pass rush and suffered a sack for a loss of 24 yards. Tests have shown that the injury is a bone bruise.

His replacement Saturday--and presumably against UCLA--was Richard Walton, who completed seven of 12 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown against the Scarlet Knights.

“It really shouldn’t change [the Longhorn offense] much,” Mackovic said. “The thing James can do [better than Walton] is to pull the ball down and scramble. We don’t have an offense designed for James and one for Richard.”

Cade McNown’s 400 passing yards Saturday against Tennessee are a personal-best and the second-best total in UCLA history. No. 1 is the 409 yards Tommy Maddox put up against USC in 1990. . . . Skip Hicks’ two touchdowns give him six for the season and 210 career points, sixth on the UCLA list. His 35 career touchdowns tie him for second with Gary Beban. Tops on the list is Gaston Green with 40. Hicks’ 270 rushing yards in two games give him 2,128 in his career, six yards from cracking the school’s top-10 list.
