Hearings Sought on Plan for New School District

Share

County education officials are preparing to gather views from the community on a proposal to create an independent school district in Lakewood.

Representatives of the Los Angeles County committee on school district organization are asking school districts headquartered in Bellflower, Cerritos, Long Beach and Paramount--all of which operate schools in Lakewood--to schedule one public hearing each on the proposal.

The committee was asked to prepare a report on the issue for state officials after the county ruled last month that Lakewood activists had gathered enough signatures to require county action.

Within 120 days of the first of the four public hearings, the county will make a recommendation to the state Board of Education on whether to create a Lakewood school district, county education officials said. The state will then conduct its own hearing to determine whether an election should be held to decide the matter.
