A man who allegedly shot his mother before firing on firefighters and police was wounded by officers in a 20-minute shootout near Cal State Long Beach, authorities said Tuesday.

The woman, 67, yelled to her neighbors in the 5900 block of Los Santos Street at 5:35 p.m. that she had been shot, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Karen Kerr. When firefighters arrived to treat her, the suspect, Edward Gember, 46, allegedly fired a rifle at them, striking the fire engine, Kerr said.

When police arrived, they returned fire, wounding Gember in the shoulder and groin. Gember emerged from the house at 6 p.m. and surrendered, Kerr said. No officers or firefighters were injured, she said.
