UCLA Holds Off UCI in Women’s Soccer

UCLA’s three first-half goals were enough to give the Bruins a 3-2 victory over UC Irvine in nonconference women’s soccer Wednesday at UCLA.

Traci Manz and Nicole Bucciarelli scored for UCI. But the Bruins were able to shut down the Anteaters the last few minutes to win.

Traci Arkenberg scored two goals for undefeated UCLA, ranked 19th in the nation, and Sommer Hammoud scored the other. UC Irvine drops to 4-2. The Bruins are 5-0.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Azusa Pacific 6, Concordia 1--Concordia’s only score came on an own-goal by Azusa. Former Laguna Hills High players Celeste Mitchell and Nicole Resitivo each scored for host Azusa Pacific. Concordia, in its first year of soccer, is 0-4 and 0-2 in league.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal State San Bernardino 3, Southern California College 1--After winning the first game, 15-9, SCC lost the next three, 15-8, 15-5, 15-13. Sally Birkhauser had nine kills to lead SCC (5-3).

San Diego 3, UC Irvine 0--San Diego defeated host UC Irvine, 15-7, 15-10, 15-9.

LaManda Mounts had 15 kills and 15 digs to lead San Diego. Sara Gunsaulus added 10 kills. Marcia Bradbeer had 12 kills to lead the Anteaters. Freshman middle blocker Larissa Carter had 10 kills and eight digs for UC Irvine (2- 5). San Diego is 2-2.
