Clinton Celebrates With Black Caucus

Papering over bitter differences on drug sentencing and education for at least one night, President Clinton and the Congressional Black Caucus celebrated their common ground in the fight against conservatives. Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat who is the caucus chairman and often an outspoken critic of some administration policies, shared the stage with Clinton, noting that she doesn’t always agree with her mother, either. Vice President Al Gore joined the party at Washington’s Union Station, where James Brown was performing. Clinton thanked the caucus for making a lifelong dream come true: “I am the opening act for James Brown.”
