O’Meara Holds On to Win Lancome

Mark O’Meara scrambled for pars over the last two holes to win the $1.1-million Lancome Trophy on Sunday by one shot over Sweden’s Jarmo Sandelin at Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France.

O’Meara, a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup squad that will challenge Europe in 10 days, shot a two-under-par 69 to finish 13 under at 271.

Sandelin shot 67 to finish at 272.

Loren Roberts shot a 64 to finish with a tournament-record 18-under-par 266 total and win the CVS Charity Classic by one stroke over Bill Glasson at Sutton, Mass.

Roberts’ total was one stroke better than George Burns’ total in 1985. He earned $216,000 for his first tour victory of the year.

Four members of the U.S. Ryder Cup team used it as a tuneup before heading to Spain. Justin Leonard led the group at seven-under thanks to a final-round 65 and Jim Furyk finished four under. Brad Faxon and Dave Maggert missed the cut.

Defending champion Karrie Webb’s 5-under-par 67 gave her a one-shot victory over Annika Sorenstam at the $550,000 Safeco Classic in Kent, Wash.

The second-year pro from Australia finished with a 72-hole total of 16-under 272, and repeated as champion of an LPGA tour event for the first time.

Patty Sheehan, a three-time winner of this tournament, led by three strokes entering the final round, but struggled with a 3-over 75 to finish third, five shots back.

Hale Irwin shot a seven-under-par 65 for a two-stroke victory in the PGA Senior Boone Valley Classic at Augusta, Mo., his seventh victory in 17 starts this year.

Irwin finished with a tournament-record 16-under-par 200 in the 54-hole event. He won $195,000, increasing his tour-leading earnings to $1,706,989--a record for the Senior PGA Tour.

Gil Morgan, who shot 65, finished second at 14 under.

R.W. Eaks, the only player to maintain full-time status on the Nike Tour since its inception in 1990, shot a 5-under-par 67 for a two-stroke victory in the San Jose Open. Eaks, of Scottsdale, Ariz., had a 16-under 272 total on the Almaden Country Club course.
