Toledo Even Earns a Family Bonus

Shhhhhh.

Don’t tell anybody, but Coach Bob Toledo didn’t make bed check Friday night in Austin, Texas.

Instead of adhering to the 11 p.m. curfew he has established for the Bruins on the road, he had a late visitor to his hotel room.

Jenna Long had come with her mom and dad, Brent and Christa Long, from the family home not far from Austin to be spoiled by her grandparents on her fourth birthday.

“I thought that suitcase was kind of heavy when we were in the airport,” grandpop Toledo said, all smiles after the Bruins’ 66-3 victory over Texas on Saturday with the help of Jenna and her younger sister Nikki in UCLA cheerleader ensembles. “It seems a lot lighter now.”

“It was about half-full of birthday presents,” grandma Elaine Toledo explained.

With no game to prepare for this week, the Bruins will spend some of their practice time looking at younger players who haven’t played much in their first three games. . . . Free safety Shaun Williams, nursing a sprained ankle, was on the sideline in Austin and said he would be ready to play when UCLA plays host to Arizona on Sept. 27 in the Rose Bowl. “I’ve got to get in on this,” Williams said. . . . Safety Larry Atkins already has four interceptions, the same number Kusanti Abdul-Salaam had last season in leading the Bruins. Atkins also leads the Bruins in tackles with 15 after turning in six Saturday, two for losses, one a nine-yard sack.
