Proposed Ordinance to Define Murals

Share

When is a mural a mural and when is it really a sign?

City planners pondered the question as they crafted a proposed ordinance that will be presented to the City Council tonight for preliminary approval. The new law would define a mural and outline a review process for approving them.

As written, the proposed ordinance defines a mural as a “work of art or painting that is applied to and made an integral part of an exterior wall.” A mural would be considered a wall sign if it contains “words, logos, trademarks or graphic representations” of a person, product or service that identifies or advertises a business. The size of signatures on murals would be limited to 2 square feet.

The city’s arts commission would review and make recommendations regarding mural applications.
