Council Panel OKs Gun Control Package

A Los Angeles City Council panel on Monday swiftly cleared the way for a full council vote on a package of gun control measures, including requirements for trigger locks on new guns and thumbprints from people who buy ammunition in the city.

With few comments, the council’s Public Safety Committee passed the proposals to the full council for a vote possibly next week.

The ordinance, drafted by City Councilman Mike Feuer, is aimed at reducing gun violence as well as helping police, particularly in determining if gun owners are stockpiling ammunition.

Among the new measures would be background checks on employees of gun dealers, a ban on the sale of clips and magazines that can be converted to hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition and a strengthening of the city’s Saturday-night special ban to prevent an owner of such a weapon from reselling it through a gun dealer.
