Sand Berm Built to Protect Homes From El Nino

Long Beach has erected a sand berm to protect oceanfront homes from storms that may be generated by expected El Nino conditions this winter.

A breakwater protects much of Long Beach from the pounding of large waves, but the Peninsula Beach area--just south of Belmont Shore--is exposed.

“The berm is up,” said parks director Ralph Cryder. “We’re down to 60 to 80 feet of sand from the boardwalk. With the threat of El Nino we will add sand and push that out another 60 feet next month.”

In normal winters, a berm is not built and the city waits until March to repair damage from winter tides, said Cryder. But this year, the city will add sand to the beach before the storms hit and will repeat the rebuilding process in the spring.
