Greene Needs Plate Inserted in Broken Wrist

The rash of injuries that has plagued the Angels of late continued Wednesday when X-rays of catcher Todd Greene’s broken right wrist revealed a displaced fracture that will require a plate to be inserted.

Greene, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 20 after suffering a non-displaced fracture when he was hit by a foul tip, apparently was re-injured about a week ago when his daughter, Aryn, tugged on his arm.

“We even get hurt when we’re on the disabled list,” Manager Terry Collins said.

Greene, who was out for the season anyway, is expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Left-hander Chuck Finley, who broke his left wrist during a fall while backing up home plate Aug. 19, had his cast removed and will begin range-of-motion exercises.

Collins said an Ozzie Smith home run that propelled St. Louis to a victory over his Houston team late last season was the turning point in the Astros’ failure to win the National League Central title.

If the Angels fall short this season, what would he consider the turning point this time?

“When Greene went down one day and Finley went down the next,” he said. “We haven’t played very well since then.”

The Angels were 66-52 and tied with Seattle for first place when Finley was injured. They are 13-21 since.
