8 School Districts Win $200,000 Grant

Eight school districts serving students from Oxnard to Camarillo have been awarded nearly $200,000 by the state Department of Education to boost curriculum in math and language arts, and to strengthen a program for career exploration.

The grant, funded by the federal Improving America’s Schools Act, was awarded to an educational consortium forged last year between the Oxnard Union High School District and its seven feeder elementary districts in Oxnard, Camarillo, Port Hueneme and El Rio.

The consortium, known as Goals 2000, brought together teachers and counselors from the eight school districts to develop standards in mathematics and language arts to help students move more smoothly from middle school to high school.

In addition, the educators will expand a program aimed at making students more aware of career choices, starting in the seventh grade.

Gary Davis, head of the consortium and an assistant superintendent of the Oxnard High School District, said the bulk of the grant will be spent on activities and materials to support the new curriculum.

“A tremendous amount of effort has gone into this work,” Davis said. “This is a real achievement for all eight districts to work together in this way.”
